Alexander St. Leger Still is a New Zealand artist and sculptor that lives and works in Naarm, Melbourne; on the lands of the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people.

Raised in the South Island of Aotearoa, Alex’s love of landscape, mountains, water, and the brutalism of scale has greatly influenced his art.

After a near death experience in 2021, his struggles with health led to an epic internality within his work, and a sense of urgent investigation into the meanings of the hooks and claws that slow us down, the currents that guide us, and the engines of being alive that powers all of this mysterious activity.

This stuff feels emotional, and, in viewing these surreal, intimate worlds of pain, riven with storms of biological reactivity, we find ourselves in a familiar and human place. A place behind tightly closed eyes.

Moving out of home at a young age, he found himself drawn to the art scene, whether music or graffiti, film or fine art. Being a musician himself, a lot of Alex Still’s early art can be found on recordings, music posters and merchandise. However, inspired by artists such as Turner, lucian freud, and PRAYSTATION as well as the advancing fields of medical microphotography and stupid computers that think they know how to reason , his drive to create more contemporary and finished pieces consumed him.

Now living in Naarm with his loving wife, Carla and his cat Django, Alex continues on his abstract journey of self-discovery, honesty and the future.
